The first egg was laid on 31 October 2009 and we now have 21 albatross eggs in total this season. That means at least 42 doting parents flying in and out of Taiaroa Head regularly. All up however, 67 different birds have been seen so far.
Parent albatross are at the beginning of a very long incubation process, 79-80 days on average! A parent needs to remain on the nest at all times, so albatross take turns incubating the egg. One bird will sit constantly on the nest, while the other is out at sea feeding. The bird at sea can be gone for several days before returning to the headland and changing over shifts with their partner.
We have had some sloppy parenting occurring this season, with several nests poorly constructed and 2 nests even being abandoned. The abandoned eggs were placed in our incubator until suitable foster parents were located. Fortunately, we had two couples that laid an infertile egg, so after a careful swap, they are now our new foster parents.
The web cam is moved on a regular basis by the guides at Taiaroa Head to try and show the best view.
One of the issues albatross face living on the mainland is the constant threat of predators such as cats, stoats and ferrets. However, the trapping programme run by the Department of Conservation helps to minimise the threat (traps are wooden boxes)
