I am Giac,
I was supposed to remove the eggs at the end of the week if nothing was happening.
But I want to reassure that, in case I was visiting the nest, I would have checked the eggs carefully before going ahead
with the removal, and if eggs were still viable, would not remove them.
I was very pessimistic about the success of this pair after the incubation has been discontinued for so long
just in the middle and could not believe Francesca (passera) when she gave me the news this morning!
Heve been working with kestrels for years and never encountered a similar situation. I was told by colleagues
that if you put a freshly laid egg into a refrigerator for one month and then you you gave to an incubating
female the egg will hacth. Two months after being laid. But this has to be done at the very beginning when the egg
has not received any heat and has not started the development.
So, is very surprising what happen today! And I am happy that after all the efforts made by this pair (and our worries)
one chick eventually hatched.. and maybe more will follow..
