STATLER NEST NEWS: CONFIRMED! THREE FEMALES, ONE MALE!

A local station (Buffalo Channel 4 - WIVB) had a brief video clip of the Statler banding that took place last week Tuesday on their Noon newscast today.

There are in fact 3 females and 1 male in the nest. To see the report and video go to the "News on Demand" link (it's the last story so be patient). http://www.wivb.com/Global/story.asp?S= ... v=menu41_2

It won't be long before these four young juveniles fledge from the nest! They are practicing wing flapping (good exercise for those young wings) and spending more time out on the ledge of the nest. Their white down is quickly being replaced with brownish flight feathers. It's amazing to think that they were "just eggs" not so very long ago.

Nests throughout the country have youngsters that are fledging, preparing to fledge, and will soon be heading out into the big open skies! As always, check the forum for the latest news and observations on nests all over the country and the world.

Peregrine falcons return to Statler Towers
New family of birds takes over nest that had been empty
By John F. Bonfatti
Updated: 06/13/07 7:24 AM

SAVE EMAIL PRINT POPULAR + Larger Font + Smaller Font The death last October of a female peregrine falcon that had produced 23 chicks in eight years at a nest in the Statler Towers made some people wonder if the nest would remain empty this year.

But officials say a new breeding pair has taken over the nest and produced four new chicks.

“It’s exciting for us to have the peregrines in Buffalo,” said Megan Gollwitzer of the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The new chicks, three females and a male, have been examined by DEC biologists and determined to be healthy.

Hatched the week of May 6, the birds have been banded and are now ready to fly, said the Buffalo Audubon Society’s Paul Fehringer.

“They are probably going to start fledging any time soon. They’re getting to that point,” said Fehringer. “They’re fully feathered.”

Peregrines were all but wiped out in the Eastern United States by the 1960s because exposure to DDT made their eggshells too brittle.

They made enough of a comeback in the 1980s and 1990s to be taken off the federal list of endangered species, but they remain on the state’s list.

Buffalo’s first pair made a nest in City Hall in 1996. The DEC, the Audubon Society and the Buffalo Ornithological Society established the Statler nest two years later, and, for the next eight years, a female named the Hillsborough bird produced 23 chicks.

Many area residents followed the exploits of the falcons and their chicks via a Web camera placed in the nest.

The Hillsborough female, named because she was banded in the New Brunswick town of that name, was found dead on a sidewalk near Delaware Avenue in October.

There were initial reports that the bird had died after flying into a window, but an autopsy by the state wildlife laboratory confirmed that she actually died from a parasitic disease probably from something ingested.

“We were hoping we’d have some peregrines, but we actually thought we had an empty nest,” said Fehringer. “We were rather surprised when we had both a male and a female show up.”

Bill Burch of the Buffalo Ornithological Society said birders spotted a new pair in the skies downtown in February. “Almost immediately, they took over the box,” he said.

In March, the two birds were observed “rubbing noses and rubbing heads,” and five eggs appeared over a weeklong period at the end of the month and start of April. One of the eggs never hatched.

Over the next several weeks, the chicks are expected to begin learning two essential survival skills: flying and hunting.

“Once they have started to learn how to fly, it will only probably take about two weeks to learn to hunt on their own, and that’s when they start going off on their own,” Fehringer said.

During the period when they are learning to fly, Gollwitzer said, those walking in the area of the Statler may find one of the chicks on the ground. She asked people not to touch the bird but instead call the DEC at 851-7010 so the birds can be taken back up to the nest.

The Buffalo breeding pair is one of only 33 pairs nesting in buildings and bridges in the state, Gollwitzer said. There are 29 pairs in natural locations in the state. Across the country, there are about 8,000 nesting pairs.

“Probabilmente stanno andando cominciare fledging in qualunque momento presto. A very special thank you to all our friends in Italy and most of all thank you to Sonia for sharing our news with all of you.

I have been very lucky to be able to see the young birds in the downtown Buffalo area. I was there with a friend last week and we found the family on buildings near the nest. Last night a small group of us went there and we did find at least 3 of the young ones and one adult. But we can not say that all four youngsters are accounted for although I do think they are all in the area.

We will keep watching as long as we can and try to find them as they fly over the skies of Buffalo. I did get a little bit of video from yesterday if you would all like to see, and one of our new Buffalo Forum members has taken some wonderful pictures.

Yesterday from 6 to 8p.m. spent time for falconwatch. Found all 6 at one time. Dad was conducting a flying lesson to 3 juvies over the HSBC skyscraper. One juvie perched not far from that site. Mom was having a meal on the corner of Main and Church street. All these activities are on my attached picturies. Birds definitely changed their location moving closer to the harbor and hanging out higher in the sky around HSBC bank.

Want to share an episode I was witnessed yesterday. First I found 2 birds on the corner of Cathedral place (Main and Church), guess Mom and daughter. Birds were sitting still next to each other crying loudly and constantly. No any movement for more then a half hour. I started to think something bad happened and one of them is in trouble. Gladly I was wrong. After a long wait Mom pushed her child away and started to clean and eat prey. Feathers flu around. I figured out that stubborn child didn't want to eat by itself and was begging to be fed. For some reason adult didn't do that. Child got a lesson.
At another picture you can try to find 5 falcons, 4 in the air, one on the edge at left building.
Other juvie was perched for a while on the top of antenna - highest point of the city of Buffalo.

Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. found 1 adult and 3 juvies flying around City Hall. Juvies were in very flying mood, it was quite an airshow. Played with each other in the air, rest for a moment on the roof of City Hall, than back to the air. Saw how one juvie tryed to play with a gull when his/her siblings flu away. They were like children - got borred at one place, change the location from Niagara square to HSBC bank and back again. Want to notice it was not any kakking just silent flight of strong beautiful birds.
