almeno per ora il mistero resta
------------------------------------------
21 Oct. 2007 (Sun. 2p - 7p) We are exceedingly grateful and extremely appreciative of the San Francisco contingent (Kanit, Cheryl,Mary and Maxine) for their experience and eagerness to assist.
The day started out rather slow, peregrine-wise. A group to the east (SJSU); group to the west; bicyclists (Toni & Lori) and two vehicles for quick overall viewing.~ Walkie-talkies came in very handy.
We saw: turkey vultures, a lovely display by white pelicans, gulls and more gulls. Peregrines must have been having 'Sunday dinner with the in-laws' because they were scarce.
~Near 5p or so a car-full decided to go check for Taylor.
~Three of us stayed at the garage for any signs of Clara or Carlos.Near 5.45p I get the 'itch' and feel a 'peregrine presence' pulling me to the west. Walked down and see a tail hanging over a s/side ledge. Get on the walkie-talkie to the Taylor gang (who had just returned to the 4th St. garage) - "Peregrine...peregrine".
~ I'm quickly joined by the gang - out come the scopes and cameras:
Clara was ready for her close-up.
~The sun has set and we head over to the Marriott and await Carlos'
appearance.
Well, a peregrine did land on the 'decorative piece'.
But, but, but with scopes staring - this bird has a 'full hood' - what? a full hood. It is Not our Clara and Not our Carlos! --- oh my who is this peregrine?...curiouser and curiouser...the mystery deepens...life is good when you can gaze upon a peregrine~!~
(thanks to the SJ group: Doris, Karla, Evet, Toni, Lori, Barbara and Songcatcher; do hope I've not forgotten anyone)
~~ A grand time was had by all -- ~ Kate

====================================
Kanit, Mary, Maxine and Cheryl, armed with scopes and cameras, came down to
San Jose today to see if we could find the birds that we've been reporting
on at the San Jose wiki. It was a bright blue fall day, perfect
temperature, when people struck out in various directions. We had walkie
talkies, maps, Lori to ride bike around the downtown, and plenty of
patience, but not as much luck as we'd like for a 5 hour adventure!

The goal here was to see if we could find Carlos, a tiercel who is hanging
out downtown, and is banded by SCPBRG. We'd like to read the band and
figure out who this guy is. Some of the band has been identified via
webcam, but of course, no certainty until all numbers are read.

Kate escorted the Canyoneers through the downtown Falcon Corridor, to the
AT&T Building and the Marriot, to point out the various roosts. Toni headed
over to San Jose State University, and another team headed down to Taylor
Street, to see if we could find Taylor in addition to Carlos. I sat atop
the Fourth Street garage, attempting to learn how to use the walkie talkie.

The birds were tricksters today. Hard tracking them down and figuring out
who we were seeing. Toni spotted Clara heading north at a fast pace from
San Jose State University, and I saw some falcon coming from north to south,
high up. We saw some very high circling over the east foothills, but no
birds came to roost at City Hall while we were out.

Around 3:30 PM, everyone convened atop the garage again, and trained
binoculars and scopes all around and just visited with other falcon fans.
That is one of the best parts of these adventures.

Finally, around 5 PM or so, the Canyoneers and I headed down to see if we
could find Taylor, the big and beautiful mysterious female who likes to hang
out at the "Civic Center" (really the County's facilities now that City Hall
has relocated downtown). No luck at The White Building, and no, Taylor
wasn't at the County jail despite the dovecote of pigeons that hangs out on
the south side of the building.

We had a false start passing back by The White Building on the way back
downtown -- I thought I saw a falcon at the top of the building, but when we
stopped, no luck. I began thinking the Canyoneers would not believe our
sightings! Seems many false starts and hopes today.

BUT, the idea of having help, fanning out with scopes and walkie talkies,
and scanning the skies with experienced Canyoneers, was very worthwhile, and
much fun.

BACK to the Fourth Street garage around 6 PM, and we just made it to the top
when the walkie talkie beeps with a sighting from Kate at the AT&T building.
So we wind down again and head over there -- 3 scopes up in short order in
the fading light. At first I'm certain it's Carlos, but Kanit doesn't see
any bands when looking at the bird. So THEN I'm convinced it is Clara. Or
almost convinced.

We head over a few blocks to the Marriott Hotel, to observe a bird that we
have always believed was this tiercel. It is nearly 7 PM, and getting dark
fast. A Peregrine sails in, and binoculars are trained. AGAIN, Kanit is
convinced there is no band on this bird, and to Kate, Lori, and I, this bird
doesn't seem to be Clara!

SO, we spent a wonderful day attempting to unravel a mystery, only to have
it become curiouser and curiouser. But, it's always good to know what you
don't know, and if we don't know this mystery guest well enough, we'll just
have to follow the example of the Canyoneers and work harder at it.

Truly one of the best things about the falcons has been the people who
follow them and care about them. This is something that has come home to me
time and again, and was clear again to me today.

The San Francisco group has set wonderful examples for all of us who follow
the Peregrines, and today was no exception.

Thanks to all of you for your company and scopepower and brainpower. We
thoroughly enjoyed it!

All the best,

Evet

pausa pranzo e sbirciata nelle mail arrivate...

leggo questo msg di Evet...
-------------------------------------------------
30 Oct. '07 -- Approx 8 PM -- Songcatcher calls me from TWB -- she's stopped off there on her way home from a meeting, and there is Taylor!! She's telling me how Taylor is tucked into the building and looking very content, when my house starts shaking up and down, and it's an earthquake -- Songcatcher said her vehicle was jumping all over!! I had to get off the phone to check on my own birds who were very freaked out!!! When I called Songcatcher back, Taylor had, of course, taken off as well.
Regarding the webcam -- JoAnne, I'm glad that you are as fond of the Peregrines here as I am. However, the webcam officially closed on June 20th, and it really only is a happenstance that it was trained again on the nestbox. This is not a matter of "fixing" the cam -- it's a matter of getting it ready for next season. There are two largeorganizations that have to coordinate hardware and software and bandwidthto make it work in the most seamless manner that provides the best possible experience -- the City, and UC Santa Cruz (of which SCPBRG is a part). I don't understand all that they are doing, but I do know that some adjustments have been made to the hardware so the camera won't rotate the wrong way -- and now that that's done, there is additional work being done on the software/signal compatibility part of the webcam.
We've been lucky to observe for as long as we have -- the PG&E cam has unfortunately not been up even for the season, and typically shuts down when the season is over.
Moreover, I'm absolutely delighted that the City and SCPBRG are working together well in advance of Spring to get things ready.
So I don't want to sound crotchety to a fellow Peregrine fan, but having a year round cam was never in the plans and the City and SCPBRG are doing the right thing in focussing on next season. Please don't underestimate what it takes to do this properly -- it takes a lot.
All the best, Evet

Sonia ha scritto:June 7, 2007: Hiko takes to the air! The young tiercel at San Jose City Hall took his first flights today. Hiko was perched on the short east ledge at approximately 1:10PM PDT when his sister accidently nudged him backwards off the ledge. He tumbled with his wings spread for a few stories before righting himself, and then made a very strong flight to the northwest around the side of City Hall. Clara steered Hiko and guided him toward his first landing. SCPBRG staff located Hiko perched in a tree two and a half blocks away on Santa Clara St., between 3rd and 4th streets. During the course of the day he made a number of other flights and was seen perched on City Hall, a house on 6th street, and the MLK Library. He is an excellent flyer, and an overachiever, as it is very rare for a newly flighted falcon to fly as much as Hiko did his first day!

Introiti di Hiko all'aria!
