Correction of the previous post- The Death of Erie
Biologists from the Ohio Division of Wildlife contacted the Museum on Monday to report that it was Erie (H/40), not Treasure, that was recovered dead last week. Cause of death was not apparent as considerable decomposition had taken place before recovery. There were reports of gulls harassing one or both of the fledglings on Friday, June 22. Erie most likely died on Saturday for so much decomposition to have occurred by Monday. This is an odd report because the adults are usually intolerant of gulls in their territory or close to their young and will chase them away.

Two questions arise.: One, where were the adults when the gulls were harassing Erie and two, had Erie sustained some injury that made him incapable of defending himself? Perhaps we will never know.

As an illustration of the usual intolerance of territorial Peregrines for Gulls, Chad and Chris Saladin took this photo of Newt the female at the I-90 nest striking a much larger Herring Gull. They reported that she did not kill the gull. The message, however, was quite clear - no gulls allowed.

Here is how I found out. I ran into two workers from the building, they are Forest City staff. They asked if I knew about the dead bird. (I did not) I then went up to the Operations Office of the Terminal Tower and spoke to one of the building managers who told me about when and how "She " was found. (they were suprized I was not informed) I was told it was Treasure. I then "ran into" the contractors who work on the building and they found the bird. And I got a discription each time of what she looked like when she was found. I was told Treasure. As the Ohio Division of Wildlife had colected the dead falcon a week ago today and had not called me or contacted the building to say other wise I went with the information I had at that time. I now know it was incorrect.

I am very sorry for any confusion. The telephone works two ways. I could have called ODW and staved off the confusion.

Forgive me.

Rest in Peace young Erie. (Scott Wright)

Thanks, Scott. There is nothing to forgive. Let me say you always know to find the best simple words in the joyful moments and in the painful as well.

Aveva solo 18 anni.

High Flight

John Gillespie Magee, Jr

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there

I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air...

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue

I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace

Where never lark or even eagle flew --

And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

John Gillespie Magee Jr.

History

During the dark days of the Battle of Britain, hundreds of Americans crossed the border into Canada to enlist with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Knowingly breaking the law, but with the tacit approval of the then still officially neutral United States Government, they volunteered to fight Hitler's Germany.

John Gillespie Magee, Jr., was one such American. Born in Shanghai, China, in 1922, Magee was just 18 years old when he entered flight training. Within the year, he was sent to England and posted to the newly formed No 412 Fighter Squadron, RCAF, which was activated at Digby, England, on 30 June 1941. He was qualified on and flew the Supermarine Spitfire.

Flying fighter sweeps over France and air defence over England against the German Luftwaffe, he rose to the rank of Pilot Officer. At the time, German bombers were crossing the English Channel with great regularity to attack Britain's cities and factories. Although the dark days of the Battle of Britain were over, the Luftwaffe was still on the job of keeping up the pressure on British industry and the country.

On September 3, 1941, Magee flew a high altitude (30,000 feet) test flight in a newer model of the Spitfire V. As he orbited and climbed upward, he was struck with the inspiration of a poem -- "To touch the face of God."

Once back on the ground, he wrote a letter to his parents. In it he commented, "I am enclosing a verse I wrote the other day. It started at 30,000 feet, and was finished soon after I landed." On the back of the letter, he jotted down his poem, 'High Flight'.

Just three months later, on December 11, 1941 (and only three days after the US entered the war), Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee, Jr., was killed. The Spitfire V he was flying, VZ-H, collided with an Oxford Trainer from Cranwell Airfield while over Tangmere, England. The two planes were flying in the clouds and neither saw the other. He was just 19 years old. He is buried in the churchyard cemetery at Scopwick, Lincolnshire.
