Oirigh presses on and Breagha stays put.

30 minutes ago by Mike H

There is only data for two days for both Breagha and Oighrig but a full data set for Caledonia. There is no need for alarm as this often happens due to the vagaries of satellite transmissions, etc.

BREAGHA

He has not been very active over the last couple of days. On 9 September he moved SW from his overnight roost near Chapelle-sur-Loire on the Loire and spent the morning and early afternoon on the Loire opposite Montsoreau before travelling in an SE direction along the Vienne River to Lac Tétine which seems to have become a favourite spot. This is a small lake which translates to Lake Pacifier/Dummy and is part of a French ZNIEFF site which is the equivalent of the UK SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). The fishing must be good (hopefully not of protected species!) as he appeared to spend all of 10 September around the lake.
Immagine
OIGHRIG

He continued his journey S on 9 September travelling around 115 km before coming to roost. He started the day by spending at least two hours on the coast 16 km W of his overnight roost. Presumably he was catching breakfast. He then flew off SSE to roost at 18.00 GMT 12 km N of Mederdra in Mauritania. He set off early on 10 September travelling only 12 km before stopping for about four hours. He then flew S to stop at 18.00 GMT to overnight on a small lake 20 km NNE of Dagana on the Senegal border. Today’s temperature forecast is 38 deg C so the lake must provide a welcome refreshing dip! The journey today was a modest 47 km.
Immagine
CALEDONIA

She appears to have had a really idle three days around the Rio Guadalquivir site. The fishing must be really good so why waste energy flying around! The weather in this area of Spain is also very hot in the high 20 deg C and only a slight chance of rain. We have not shown Caledonia’s location on a map for some time so here is a view of her favourite location.

September Satellite Report
57 minutes ago by Jayne Stevenson

Oighrig

Oighrig flew across into Senegal on the 11th around 8am. Arrived on the coast, on the 12th and investigated the town of Rufisque. By the 13th and 14th Oighrig was exploring the area and hinterland around the town of Nguekokh.
Immagine
Breagh

Breagh is still in the centre of France, seems to particularly like a roost near the La Vienne, which runs into La Loire.
Immagine
Caledonia

Caledonia likes Sevilla and is still around the same area on the Rio Guadalquivir.

Oighrig has found his winter gardens 70km south of Dakar and settels in the lagune de la Somone near Reserve de Bandia and little town Nguekhokh.
Looks pretty good there at the Atlantic Ocean...

Just a quick update

Mike H 19 Sep 2013 2:46 PM

We have been having a number of internet connection issues at Forest Lodge and Jayne has not been able to update the osprey tracking or blog. Our apologies. However, I have found a brief gap in my holiday to have a quick look at the data. I can tell you that all three birds still appear to be alive and well.

Caledonia is still around her favourite Rio Guadalquivir haunt N of Seville and has made a few short trips. Breagha is still in the Loire and travelling around the area between the Loire and Vienne rivers using Lac Tetine as a base. Oighrig has moved a little further S in Senegal and on 17 September was near a small town called Joal Fadriout.

There is another data update on Saturday when I will be back at the computer and will give you all a full update on what has been going on.

All birds are just relaxing ............

Posted 4 days ago by Mike H 7 4

All the birds seem to have settled down and are not travelling very much. Of course this may only be a temporary situation for Oighrig and Breagha but who knows we may yet be in for more surprises!

BREAGHA
There is some missing data for parts of 22 and 23 September but the information we have suggests that he is still staying around the Lac de Tétine area with the occasional trip to the Vienne River. His longest journey appears to have been around 4 km N of the lake when at 11.00 GMT he was flying N towards the Loire River having first visited the Vienne at 09.00 GMT.

Immagine

OIGHRIG
He seems to have settled for the time being at least in S Senegal just N of the Gambia border at a point which is 5 km NNE of the town of Joal-Fadiouth. He has being exploring over a small area making occasional visits to the coast presumably to fish. On 21 September between 10.00 and 18.00 GMT he made a round trip of around 14 km in a SE direction from his main area.

The map shows that he is in a very dry, arid area. The raw satellite data is initially processed on maps using the ArcGIS mapping platform produced by ESRI. These maps for the Senegal area show a lot of green vegetation in the area where Oighrig is currently. However these maps are not as good for producing images as Google Earth. The Google maps are dated 10 April 2013 which should be the dry season. So the ArcGIS maps should show a better representation of what Oighrig’s location is like as it is now the end of the rainy season in Senegal. I have included an ArGIS map for comparison.

Immagine

CALEDONIA
She continues limit her travel to around the small Rio Guadalquivir location she has chosen as ‘home’. However on 23 September at 15.00 GMT travelling SW. This was close to La Algaba and the upper reaches of the Rio Guadalquivir and around 1.8 km N of the main Rio site. The data collection points are every 2 hours so she may well have travelled further in between record times.

Next update will be on Saturday as I am away on Friday.

Latest osprey whereabouts.......
Posted 1 day ago by richard thaxton

The latest download of data from Mike showing the whereabouts of our ospreys, is as follows.

BREAGHA

He roosted overnight on the banks of the Vienne River on 26 September having spent most of the day in that region. On 27 September he was around the Lac de Tétine all day roosting there overnight. On 28 September however he was a little more adventurous. Between 09.00 and 15.00 GMT he was 7 km NW of the lake on the Loire River opposite the town of Montsoreau but he returned to roost overnight on the lake. On 29 September he returned to the same area of the Loire at 09.00 GMT and spent all day there including roosting overnight. The following image shows his location on 28 and 29 September.
Immagine
OIGHRIG

Oighrig has spent most of the time within a 0.5 km radius area to the E of the town of Nagozobil where he has roosted overnight. This area appears to be quite wooded with a stream/river running close by when viewed in the ESRI mapping tool (current rainy season view) but is a dried up wadi on the attached Google map (the dry season view). He did make a couple of short excursions of around 2 km from this area at 08.00 GMT on 28 September to the coastal waters and at 16.00 GMT on the same day passing over a lake-like area 2.5 km to the SW of the roost.
Immagine
CALEDONIA

Most of the time again recorded around the Rio Guadalquivir roost site but she has also been a little more adventurous over the last few days. At 07.00 GMT she was flying SSW down the Rio Guadalquivir some 3.5 km from the roost but she was back in her normal area by 09.00 GMT. At 15.00 GMT on the same day she was 2.5 km NE of the Rio and travelling W. The 29 September at 09.00 GMT recorded her 22 km NE of the Rio travelling W over a man-made reservoir on farmland to the E of the town of Brenes.

The next downloads will be on Wednesday and Saturday and these will be kindly done by Jayne who remember also has a full time job! It may not be possible therefore to do the Saturday download until Monday next. Shortly after these downloads the frequency of satellite downloads will change to weekly but it is not clear on what date this will happen.
