June 13, 2007: It seems that Esperanza (female O5R) not only is able to make it back up to the nest ledge, but during this warm sunny afternoon, she seems to like it up there. She showed up a little after noon today, and was seen devouring a large pigeon in the nest box. After a little running around on the ledge, she left, albeit briefly, and then returned to sleep off her rather large lunch. Although they don't routinely return to the nest after fledging, in this situation, there are very few high ledges in this part of San Jose, other than the business building at San Jose State University, and the Library on San Fernando St. As such, the City Hall ledge may be more appealing for these young falcons to return to over the next few days.

================================

As a brief update on the San Jose family, they all seem to be doing well.
All 5 were seen on Thursday night by observers, and there is a very regular
group of observers that are downtown in San Jose almost every night to watch
on report on the doings. The wiki set up for San Jose has a field blog and
regular reports and additions are made to it. All on topic (how nice)!

Songcatcher and I joined the group last evening, and saw Clara sitting in a
tree with a very full crop (first for me, I'd never seen her in a tree),
Esperanza on the SJSU business tower hopping happily about over some prey,
Jose on the east side on the Marriot Hotel. We didn't see Hiko or Spirit,
but seeing as how they were seen right after the 4th of July fireworks
downtown, I guess they are still around. Clara and Esperanza flew from
their locales towards the west, and then we didn't see them more.

We left around 9 PM and drove by the "summer home" of Jose and Clara, and
she was sitting on the AT&T building on Almaden. There was still a lot of
ambient light, and she was clearly eyeing us as we looked at her. She
really doesn't like to be bothered by humans, even when way above them, I
feel. So we left her to get some rest. Every Star is due a bit of privacy!

Yesterday, the Interim City Manager for San Jose, Les White, had a going
away gathering at City Hall. I attended to give him some photos of the SJ
family -- as he definitely couldn't take time off to watch the young fledge!
Les was absolutely critical to the SJ webcam -- and he definitely likes the
birds and is a photographer himself. The falcons have infiltrated all
aspects of City life. His going-away cake had a reproduced photo of Les on
it, with the words "Happy Fledging" on either side of the photo! (I had
absolutely zero to do with that and it wasn't my idea!)

Additionally, every single person that spoke with me at the gathering had
questions or updates about the family -- where they had or had not seen them
lately, how empty City Hall feels with the birds not right on the building
for the summer, what spectacular flying they saw earlier in the week. The
falcons have affected the entire culture at City Hall. Plus, I always have
something to talk about, not being a sports fan or one to play golf!

There will be a short story on the San Jose pair on the KQED TV program
"Quest", on Channel 9, Tuesday the 24th at 7:30 PM. KQED is dedicating the
story to Brian Walton.

We are counting down the days now with the young in the area. We will
definitely notice and they will be very missed.

--------------------------------------------------
Although San Jose's most popular reality show is over, people are still speculating about where three fledgling peregrine falcons will make their new home.
Spirit, Esperanza and Hiko were born and raised at their parents' home atop the tower of San Jose City Hall, and are currently searching for a new territory to claim their own.

Linda Davidge of Willow Glen thinks she saw one of the trio in her back yard Wednesday morning.

"I saw it come into my yard and grab one of the doves," she said. Davidge is one of the many fans who watched the early days of the falcons via a Webcam, admitting that she often watched the falcons for an hour five times a week.

She's not alone. Fans as far as Egypt to New Zealand regularly logged on - often for hours at a time - to view the three baby falcons. "We had a woman from England write in saying the falcons were the first thing she saw in the morning and the last thing she saw at night," said Mona Favorite-Hill, public communications manager at San Jose City Hall. "They've got a lot of parents everywhere."

The San Jose City Hall falcons will be featured at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on "QUEST," a weekly KQED-TV show. The program will feature the courtship of Clara and Jose and their first days of parenthood.

Birders from the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group observe the three fledglings' whereabouts each day at noon. Esperanza and Spirit have been spotted around downtown San Jose and the San Jose State
campus.
And, as boys will be boys, brother Hiko is reportedly a regular around the women's dorm at San Jose State, according to Favorite-Hill. The three have a banding around one leg with a number that distinguishes it as one of the San Jose City Hall falcons. Parents of the trio, Clara and Jose, still reside in the tower at City Hall.

Fans of the trio were given a scare last week, when it was believed that one of the falcons had crashed into a window at the Hilton in downtown San Jose. "My phone was going nuts," said Favorite-Hill. Nerves were calmed when the fire department determined that a red-tailed hawk, not a falcon, was the bird that ran into the window.

So, will the San Jose-based reality show that captured the attention of millions worldwide in the spring be making a return to the Web? Fans of Clara and Jose can only hope. "There's a very high possibility that this will happen again," said Glenn Stewart of the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, "but this is nature . . . there are no guarantees."

As for the fledglings, the trio may take two to four years to find a permanent territory, according to Stewart. "Nobody knows where they're going to end up, they could be miles away in a matter of minutes," Stewart said.

Meanwhile, falcon fans like Davidge will fondly remember the first days of one of San Jose's most famous bird families. "I was just grateful to be able to watch the process for six weeks or so," said Davidge. "I hope it happens again next year."
