Mariah ha ripreso a mangiare qualche pezzetto di quaglia imbevuto con un preparato reidratante (Pedialyte). Carol si prende cura di lei insieme ai veterinari ed è possibile che Mariah cominci a riconoscerla anche perché segue i movimenti con gli occhi, cosa che ieri non faceva.
Le feci scure possono essere indice di emorragia interna, ma anche dovute al fatto che evidentemente non ha mangiato per giorni.
Molte incertezze, non è fuori pericolo.
La decisione di trasportarla a Syracuse non mi piace, un viaggio non è prudente in questo momento. Inoltre Carol non potrà andare con lei e mi sembra invece importantissimo il legame che si sta creando tra loro..
In questo caso essere un falco speciale nuoce.. E' solo una mia opinione, s'intende.

Vedere Mariah in queste condizioni, lei regina dei cieli ed essere libero e fiero, mi fa veramente stare male. Forse il mio è un pensiero che non condividerete, ma forse era meglio morire nel combattimento che rimanere così? Scusate se il discorso è brutto ma è un pensiero che mi è venuto così d'impulso. ma la speranza resta. Lei e' una combattente nata. E spesso i falchi ci hanno sorpreso. Quando lo scorso anno ho lwetto dei lavori al palazzo Kodak ho pensato subito al peggio.. e ora posso anche dire che il peggio si e' mostrato in tutta la sua pienezza. Prima Kaver che non torna, poi il nuovo maschio che subito muore, ora lei ferita e il tutto costellato dei suoi tentativi di tornre alla vecchia casa o trovarne una nuova.. Si hanno notizie del maschio con cui sembrava aver trovato feeling? Probabile che ne suo rifiuto dei vari nidi predisposti sia andata a interferire coi territori di altri falchi. Rochester e i suoi dintorni sembrano molto "abitati"

Il tuo pensiero fa parte dei pensieri contraddittori che vanno e vengono dalla mia mente, Vanna. Le sono vicina come mi è accaduto solo con gli amici più cari e capisco che non sono 'normale'.
Si, Roxy, Rochester e dintorni, tutto l'Ohio, la Pennsylvania e il Canada sono molto abitati e le battaglie territoriali sono destinate a diventare sempre più frequenti. Ma anche in Olanda e Svezia(vedi Helsingborg).
Nel caso di Mariah, attaccata da 2 falchi insieme, fatto ben poco documentato, pare che il maschio fosse proprio il suo ultimo compagno..

Nubo and the new female have already bonded. Based on comparing my photos from this weekend and those taken on the Brighton building, I'm convinced that the Brighton female is now the Midtown female. No one has spotted any falcons in Brighton since the middle of last week and that was the female."
Temo che ormai non ci sia più posto per lei nei cieli di Rochester dove regnano ormai falchi ben più giovani. In questo caso, quando si è spezzato il legame con Kaver per la sua morte si è alterato quell'equilibrio che l'ha vista per tanti anni regina.
Posso solo pensarla, non riesco ad essere ottimista..

probabile che mariah alla ricerca di un nuovo compagno dopo che purtroppo il giovane con cui aveva legato e' prematuramente morto, sia finita col "mettersi" in pericolo andando a cercare il maschio di una coppia che bazzicava quel territorio. Ma cosi' come la vedevo nera al momento in cui ho scoperto che la Kodak avrebbe distrutto il nido storico, sono invece possibilista ora. La stagione e' persa ma non e' detto che la regina non possa tornare ad avere un suo piccolo regno, partiva svantaggiata e molto. I suoi ormoni si erano mossi da tempo e lei aveva fretta questo le ha fatto fare un passo falso. Ma io credo che nella "vecchietta" ci sia ancora dell'altro e che ci sorprendera'. Quando a quello che dice Vanna. Forse si e forse no.. La vita a volte ci sorprende e quando crediamo che non valga piu' la pena tira fuori ancora qualche raggio di sole il mio augurio e' che cosi' sia anche per Mariah. Non le auguro una fine in cattivita' , badate bene, ma finche' c'e' vita c'e' speranza...

Devo dire che lo stesso pensiero che ha avuto Vanna è venuto anche a me. Non conosco bene Mariah ma dalle immagine che ho visto e i racconti di tutti, a me sembra che quasi una morte in combattimento sarebbe preferibile.
Non la vedo in cattività, per quanto sia 'dolce' e circondata da persone premurose per lei. Temo che ci potrebbe essere un crollo quando si renderà conto di dove sta...
Stamattina ho visto un aggiornamento sulle condizioni di Mariah. Sembra che non abbia sofferto molto nel viaggio a Syracuse, anzi l'hanno descritta come "feisty", una parola quasi intraducibile ma che significa "all'erta con spirito" (il Garzanti da "irascibile, aggressivo" ma c'è molto dello spirito nel vero significato). Il tecnico a Syracuse ha descritto questo atteggiamento come buono e mi sembra propria nello spirito di Mariah. La ferita che desta più preoccupazioni è quella alla gola ma hanno deciso di darle tempo di riprendere dal viaggio (Syracuse è circa 110 km da Rochester) prima di fare ulteriori indagini.

Quando l'uomo s'intromette nella natura succedono SEMPRE dei disastri. Mariah è una delle tante vittime dell'ingordigia umana, di quei personaggi della Kodak che per anni hanno usato la sua immagine come pubblicità per i loro stupidi prodotti, e che hanno costruito un mondo mediatico intorno al suo nido senza che lei lo sapesse, sfruttando per 24 ore al giorno la sua immagine. Mariah in tutti questi anni ci ha insegnato tanto e chiesto nulla, forse non avrebbe mai immaginato che le sarebbe stato negato il suo nido, il palcoscenico dal quale ogni anno trasmetteva in diretta il miracolo della vita che si rinnova. Questo non accadrà più. Lei, regina del cielo, ha perso prima il suo compagno, poi il nuovo pretendente, fino al combattimento recente per il territorio che l'ha quasi ferita a morte. Aveva scelto il nido sul grattacielo Kodak e se l'era meritato con tanti anni di pubblicità gratuita, i dirigenti dei lavori non potevano attendere la fine della primavera? Lasciandole così covare i piccoli nel suo nido? Cos'erano in fondo pochi mesi? Davvero molto poco. La coscienza non se la puliscono con i falsi nidi messi li a sua disposizione, ma non capiscono che è il falco che sceglie e non l'uomo? E lo fa in base a criteri che noi non possiamo nemmeno comprendere. Sono anni che seguo questa splendida creatura, le auguro di guarire presto e riprendere libera il cielo, spero solo non abbiano intenzione di metterla in gabbia. Ma dall'uomo, purtroppo, dobbiamo aspettarci di tutto. Vergogna!

Klaus, sono pienamente d'accordo con te. E l'ho pensato da subito che i lavori erano una disdetta. Credo anche per ora l'area del nido non sia coinvolta e che invece di mettere la rete per non farla andare li avrebbero potuto gestire diversamente la cosa.. e procedere dopo maggio quando i pulli sarebbero stati in volo. Certo che a questo si sono sommate un bel tot di disgrazie sulla piccola regina di rochester.. La scomparsa di Kaver, la morte del giovane pretendente.. e infine nella ricerca di un maschio il suo sconfinamento, o la nuova coppia ha realizzato che non essendo piu' presente nell'area migliore una coppia nidificante si prospettava la possibilita' di andare verso una situazione migliore. Una serie sconfinata di sfortune che sembra innescata dal problema del nido. Io mi auguro che la matriarca riesca ad insegnarci ancora tanto. Ma certo Rochester non sara' piu' quella senza di lei (come a suo tempo per me San Francisco senza George & Grace)... Amo tutti i falchi che vedo, ma qualcuno ti resta piu' nel cuore Mariah e Kaver sono tra questi una gran coppia che ha generato molti bei falchi con successo.. Si diceva che dietro a un grande uomo c'e' sempre una grande donna, si puo' dire che dietro a un grande falco c'e' sempre un grande terzuolo..... Incrocio le dita per Mariah e continuo a sperare che lei possa sorprenderci ancora in positivo

Grazie, Klaus, per il tuo post che condivido, anche perché mi sembra che siamo rimasti in pochi tra quelli che hanno seguito M&K per anni.
Se scorri i commenti su Imprints (dove ormai mi rifiuto di postare), vedrai anche tu che molti difendono la Kodak. Non sono al corrente dei suoi eventuali problemi (che non mi interessano), ma non li ritengo tali da giustificare questo disastro che continuo a pensare come tragedia.
Non sappiamo se Mariah volerà ancora, nessun FP è prevedibile.
Ma in caso contrario è certo che starà in un centro per rapaci insieme ad altri che non possono essere rilasciati senza serio pericolo. Per quanto amata e trattata con ogni cura, pur sempre un'attrazione.
Di qui l'amarezza profonda e la rabbia..

Mike Allen sent an email with an update on Mariah’s condition, which we’ve excerpted here.
I thought I’d let you know that Mariah made Syracuse without incident. Our veterinarian examined her closely and was very grateful for the detailed log of what had been done since she was picked up on Sunday. She was quite feisty even after the long trip and the vet tech commented that “feisty is good.” The concern obviously is the wound at her throat. They wanted to give her some time to settle in before examining further. I’m not sure how often I’ll be updating this situation but I will try to do so as frequently as time allows. My interpretation is that she is in excellent hands and has already made “new friends!”
Ecco come, con ogni verosimiglianza, è andata l'ultima battaglia di Mariah.
Jim Pisello, insieme a Joyce ed altri, è stato in parte testimone e in parte ha ricostruito con molta chiarezza lo svolgimento dei fatti.
Mariah era stata già battuta prima di domenica e questo spiega la scelta di 'Nubo' (il suo partner fino a quel momento) che ha naturalmente ritenuto l'avversaria più forte e quindi più desiderabile come compagna.
E spiega, la mattina di Pasqua, l'attacco congiunto e violentissimo della nuova coppia nei confronti di Mariah, già ferita, ma ancora presente nel territorio. Non si è lasciata cacciare (lei!), è rimasta a difendere il suo regno ormai perduto. Ovviamente senza l'intervento di Carol e Brian sarebbe stata uccisa.
Niente di diverso da altre mille battaglie che, insieme a Kaver, aveva vinto. Niente di speciale nel mondo dei falchi.
Ne muoiono tanti, forse la maggior parte, allo stesso modo. La specie continua.

Was Thursday the End of Mariah's Reign?
Just a few hours after I took the pictures in my post from the 10th, everything changed. Mariah was injured in a territory battle sometime on Friday, and nearly killed when the battle resumed on Easter Sunday. It's been a hectic few days, but it looks like we have a pretty good idea of of what happened, so here's the story as we know it.
On Thursday afternoon, fellow watcher Carol Phillips and I were downtown checking out the new guy, trying to get a read on his ID band. Unfortunately I didn't have my scope, and he stayed up pretty high on the building.
Mariah flew in after a while and they both sat on Midtown, moving around occasionally and vocalizing to each other. Things were pretty quiet, when Carol suddenly pointed out a falcon flying along Court Street, pretty high up. Almost immediately Mariah and the tiercel began kacking in alarm. Mariah was the more agitated, and after a quick look around she got airborne, chasing after the intruder.
It appeared that she had driven off the interloper, but I suspect now that this may have been the opening move in a territory battle that spanned the long Easter weekend. On Friday we saw Mariah and 'Nubo' again, and all appeared well, as I noted in my last post.
After I left though, it seems that things took a more dangerous turn. Mariah got into a territory battle with the intruder, who, it seems, is the same female that had been located in the nearby town of Brighton. I don't have any confirmation of this, but fellow watcher Joyce Miller (who has the same camera setup that I do) has been observing the Brighton female for several weeks. Apparently she has some distinctive markings that Joyce was able to identify on Sunday following the second and final battle between Mariah and the newcomer.
Chronologically, here's what we believe happened. On Friday afternoon or evening the first attack occurred. At that time, Mariah suffered an injury to her back. It is likely that she retreated after this encounter. On Saturday, both Carol and Joyce, along with other local watchers, observed 'Nubo' and a female (Mariah they thought at the time) socializing on Midtown. However, both Joyce and Carol noted that the female appeared to be darker than Mariah. In hindsight, this was almost certainly the intruder. 'Nubo' and the female were observed exchanging food and exhibiting other social behaviors. This is normal, expected behavior if Mariah had been the loser in a territory fight; the victorious female, having won the territory would begin courtship with the resident male. 'Nubo', seeing the victorious female as the stronger and more capable mate, would do the same.
On Sunday morning Carol and watcher Brian H arrived downtown early, just in time to see a falcon being attacked near the Midtown Plaza tower by two others. The fight was by all accounts vicious, with one falcon (later found to be Mariah) being repeatedly dived upon and even driven into the wall of a nearby building before she fell to the ground. She went up again, keeping up the fight but was quickly brought to ground again under an intense attack. At that point, fearing for the life of the downed falcon, Brian and Carol interceded, covering the falcon in a jacket and removing it from further harm. It took some time to secure care for her, but eventually they were directed to a local wildlife rehabilitator, where Mariah was taken.
She was examined by a vet on Sunday and found to have sustained multiple injuries. The most serious was a deep puncture wound to her chest which fortunately didn't damage any internal organs. She also had a wound to her back that the vet said was a couple of days old. It is this wound that leads us to believe that Mariah's first encounter with the intruder was on Friday afternoon. In addition she had a lacerated wing and some vision problems that may have been symptomatic of a concussion from her collision with the building.
Over at Imprints they've been posting updates on Mariah's condition, and you can go there to get all the latest news. This morning Mariah was moved to a vet in Syracuse at the direction of the DEC. She'll probably need surgery, and the DEC has apparently used this vet in the past for work with injured falcons and eagles. We've been assured that they'll keep us updated on her progress.
So what does all this mean? It's obviously a blow to Mariah's many fans. For a dozen years she commanded the skies in Rochester. The city won't be the same without her. She became a true legend, fledging more offspring from this single nest than any other single Peregrine in the US, as far as we can determine.
The best case scenario would have her make a full recovery. The DEC has expressed an interest in releasing her to the wild if she's able. That's only right and proper; a mistress of the air should have her freedom. On the other hand, given her great affinity for Rochester she'd probably return here, and perhaps face another territory battle against a young, strong female against whom she has already fallen. So releasing her, while the right thing to do, is not a zero-risk affair.
Mariah's fierce spirit and wild majesty will be sorely missed, but in the meantime we have a vibrant new pair in town. From a species standpoint this is a good news story. Only a few years ago the population was too small to allow for these kind of territory disputes. The fact that there are young, strong challengers around means that we've got a good chance of having more strong fledglings here in Rochester. As with any change this one will take some getting used to, but I'm sure that before long these falcons will wend their way into our hearts just as Mariah and Kaver did.

I think many people around the world know Mariah and this is such devasting news.
Her nest box was removed from the Kodak building, her mate Kaver did not return from migration, another male (from Canada) was found dead and now Mariah is gravely injured in a territorial battle.
We all know this is nature's way but it does not make it any easier for her many fans.
Healing thoughts, heartfelt prayers and loving best wishes to this Mighty Matriarch of Rochester, New York.

I realized it is nature's way, but she was displaced from the Kodak building and maybe she wandered into another female's territory.
Some problems are nature's way and some are man made. I hope she recovers and they get the nest box back on the kodak building. She is an old bird and set in her ways probably. If it hadn't of been for those two people rescuing her, she would have ended her life as a displaced falcon.
I think Kodak knew the risks, but I don't think they ever expected something like this to happen. They moved the nest and tried to make it nice for her and Kaver. Who could have ever predicted the one calamity after another scenario!!
Hopefully Mariah will make a full recovery.
