Chicks banded and named
Ohio Division of Wildlife biologists banded the two chicks this morning. They identified 1 male and 1 female. The names were selected from the suggestions sent in by the eighth grade students at Rock Hill Middle School in Ironton, Ohio, courtesy of teacher Denise Fraley. The names are as follows:
Erie (male) __________Black/green H/40______________ U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Band # 2206-72338
Treasure (female)_____Black/green M/82______________U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Band # 1687-01847
The color bands with the alphanumeric codes will allow readier identification of the two as they grow up and disperse from the Cleveland, area.
As the two chicks grow, a size difference will become readily apparent between them, only it will be the female that is bigger. In most raptor species, the females are larger than males. In Peregrine Falcons, the males are called tercels or tiercels as they are one third smaller than the females. This is called reversed sexual size dimorphism, reversed because usually males are larger than females in vertebrate species.
Qui piuttosto infelice, data l'occasione...(by Bobby)

Dice in sequenza rapida:

BeckyS :
"The look on SW's face while looking over the drawbridge is one reason I could never attend the banding. It's a great, clear picture, bobby, and shows the tenacity and fear she feels. I understand why the bandings are important, but there's no denying the stress for the parents."
