13 September and we meet Pappa face-to-face
We had to do it. The plants on the balcony were drooping, and the night light was pointing in the wrong direction. So under our trusty old umbrella, we ventured out onto the balcony - and came face-to-face with glaring Pappa.
Pappa is a handsome owl. This year I've noticed that the white chin Pappa sports is even more pronounced and regal-looking. But he's anything but regal or handsome when he's directly above your head with a frown on his face, as he's watching your every move. It's a little intimidating to say the least.
Needdless to say, we were in and out off that balcony - their balcony - within minutes. Night light tweaked, plants water (not PPO's nest though) and a ponder over how to move the microphone that is stuck fast to the railing.
I've never known any handymen to work as quickly as we have to under the watchful eye of our dear Pappa.
Anyone want to hire Pappa?

Abbiamo dovuto farlo. Le piante sul balcone erano cadenti, e la luce notturna puntava nella direzione sbagliata. Quindi, sotto il nostro vecchio fidato ombrello ci siamo avventurati sul balcone - e ci siamo trovati faccia a faccia con un minaccioso Pappa.
Pappa è un bel gufo. Quest'anno ho notato che il bianco del mento è ancora più pronunciato e di aspetto regale. Ma lui è tutt'altro che regale o bello quando è direttamente sopra la nostra testa con una smorfia sul volto, mentre sta guardando ogni nostra mossa. E 'un po' intimidatorio per non dire altro.
Fuori e dentro dal balcone in un attimo. Notte di luce ottimizzato, piante annaffiate (non nido PPO però) e riflettere su come spostare il microfono che è attaccato alla ringhiera.
Non ho mai conosciuto un tuttofare lavorare più velocemente sotto l'occhio vigile del nostro caro Pappa.
Qualcuno vuole assumere Pappa?

ma che traffico hanno.....e quanta pazienza ....le pensano tutte e fare tutto così in fretta..sotto l'occhio vigile e un po' minaccioso di Pappa....sono troppo forti !!!!

buon giorno......quel vaso le è un po' stretto, si sentirà anche ben protetta, ma quando ci saranno i piccoli che cresceranno per lei non ci sarà più posto e resterà a vigilare sul bordo

20 September and time to reflect
I remember the day Pot Plant Owl arrived like it was yesterday. We woke up one morning late August to a noise on our balcony that is off our bedroom. I pushed open the curtains to see who was making the racket, and there she was...

This beautiful, alert owl stared straight at me. She was standing in the pot plant facing my direction and when she saw me, she set those piercing eyes on me. I was mesmerised.

Now, five years on, PPO and Pappa are as much a part of the family as our pets are. She's been nesting with us for 20 days this season and yet I've hardly spent much time 'with' her. Work is busy. New puppy demands a lot of attention. Our own parrot is laying copious amounts of eggs for the first time ever this year. All of these things could be valid excuses for spending less time 'with' PPO.

But, in truth, they are not good enough reasons at all. Especially when dealing with wildlife whose very existance hangs tenuously in the balance in an urban environment especially.

So I'm taking a step back to the start of this wonderful story that began five years ago. I'm going to remind myself each and every day why Pot Plant Owl and Pappa are so special, starting with the first 'Good Morning Mommy' greeting that I say to PPO.

And, not only am I going to spend less time answering the work phone (sorry Al) and more time sitting watching PPO from the makeshift 'hide', I am going to go back to five years ago.

When there was no-one else watching, we sat for hours on the patio below watching the owls fly around above our heads.
When there was no-one else listening, we switched off our tv and listened to the hoots and calls of the owl family.
When there was no-one else writing, I recorded every little detail - day in, and day out - not wanting to miss a single minute.

If you are watching the cam or reading the blog, I'd like to suggest that you try to do it like we did five years ago.

With no expectation. Just to sit back and watch / read / listen and let the owls share their story.

Speaking of story, we remain at the 'paint-drying' section of PPO's incubation period. It's long and tiring and boring - for her and for us. She really appears to be more content in her new pot plant this year - especially at midday when the sun is set high in the sky, and she's still got a good cover protecting her from the heat. Hang in there, Mamma - not long to go!

Il 20 settembre e tempo di riflessione.
Mi ricordo il giorno dell'arrivo di Pot Plant Owl come se fosse ieri. Una mattina verso la fine di agosto, siamo stati svegliati da un rumore dal balcone della nostra camera da letto. Ho aperto le tende per vedere la causa del chiasso, e lei era lì...

Una gufa bellissima e attenta mi fissava. Era nel vaso dei fiori guardando nella mia direzione e quando mi ha visto, si è messa quegli occhi penetranti su di me. Sono stata ipnotizzata.

Ora, cinque anni dopo, PPO e Pappa fanno parte della famiglia esattamente come i nostri animali domestici. Questa stagione lei si trova già al nido da 20 giorni e tuttora ho passato poco tempo 'con' lei. C'è molto lavoro. Il nuovo cucciolo di cane richiede tanta attenzione. La nostra pappagalla depone tantissime uova per la prima volta in assoluto quest'anno. Tutte queste cose potrebbero essere scuse valide per passare meno tempo 'con' PPO.

Ma, in verità, non sono per niente motivi validi. Soprattutto quando si tratta di una natura la cui esistenza è in bilico nel ambiente urbano.

Così, faccio un passo indietro all'inizio di questa storia meravigliosa che ha cominciato cinque anni fa. Mi ricorderò ogni giorno il perché Pot Plant Owl e Pappa sono così speciali, cominciando dal primo 'Buongiorno mamma' che dico a PPO.

E, non solo passerò meno tempo a rispondere al telefono di lavoro (chiedo scusa Al) e più tempo seduta a guardare PPO dal 'nascondiglio' di fortuna, ma tornerò indietro nel tempo a cinque anni fa.

Quando nessun'altro osservava, passavamo delle ore sul terrazzo sotto a guardare i gufi che volavano sopra le nostre teste.
Quando nessun'altro ascoltava, abbiamo spento la Tv e ascoltavamo i fischi e le chiamate della famiglia dei gufi.
Quando nessun'altro scriveva, io registravo ogni piccolo dettaglio - giorno dopo giorno - non volendo perdere un solo minuto.

Se stai guardando la cam e leggendo il blog, vorrei suggerirvi di provare a farlo come abbiamo fatto noi cinque anni fa.

Senza aspettative. Di solo sedersi e guardare/leggere/ascoltare e permettere che i gufi condividono la loro storia.

Parlanda della storia, siamo al momento "asciugamento della vernice" della cova di PPO. E' lungo, faticoso e noioso - per lei e anche per noi. Sembra che sia veramente più contenta nel nuovo vaso quest'anno (Nota per i nuovi al thread: ha scelto un vaso diverso dello stesso balcone quest'anno) - soprattutto a mezzogiorno quando il sole è alto nel cielo e lei è ancora ben coperta per proteggerla dal caldo. Tieni dura, Mamma - ci manca poco!

Vi spiego "asciugamento della vernice". C'è un'espressione in inglese per descrivere le situazioni noiose: "It's as interesting as watching paint dry", letteralmente è interessante esattamente come guardare la vernice che si asciughi.

e Tracy trabocca d'amore per questa speciale famiglia di gufi, all'inizio era un po' preoccupata per l'arrivo del cane ma sembra che tutto proceda bene e PPO è così concentrata nella cova
