18 days after reuniting with her partner LM12 at Loch of the Lowes, LF15 finally put an end to our anxious wait and laid her first egg of the season in the early hours of this morning!
Over the last few days she has kept us guessing, however definite behavioural changes during the night led us to believe that she was close to laying and thankfully she didn’t disappoint! It started off a quiet evening with the female perched on the nest, trying to get some sleep whilst being rocked by the blustery breezes. But at 12.25am this all changed as she moved to the centre of the nest appearing very alert and for the next 10 minutes she proceeded to fidget constantly in the middle of the nest cup, seemingly unable to settle...

Ospreys usually lay eggs 2 to 3 days apart so we started the nightshift yesterday hoping that tonight would be the night that egg number 2 would arrive. The next few hours were spent in anticipation as she grew increasingly restless, shifting position ever more frequently. At 00:53 she stood up, raised her tail and began a high pitched calling, telling us that an egg would soon be on its way. Her tail began to pulse and in time her whole body was pulsing with contractions. At 01:03 she went still and stood up to reveal 2 eggs in the nest cup! After manoeuvring herself and her clutch into a suitable position she gently lay down to incubate them and had soon nodded off for a more peaceful rest of the night. Fingers crossed we will have a third egg in the nest shortly!

We like THREE of them with an EJ on top! Yes folks, as many of you will know by now, EJ has proven herself, yet again, to be a three-egg-girl and produced her third egg at around 10.20pm last night (Wednesday). Apologies, as I think the camera was off at the time due to a power cut at Carnyx’s end...but we got some beautiful night shots later on of EJ revealing her clutch to the world. This third egg is the 45th egg EJ has laid at the Loch Garten nest – she is certainly a productive bird!

At 05:22 this morning we managed to get our first glimpse of our suspected cracked egg in daylight, and were delighted to see a very small hole in the egg shell!
