We've been contacted by several folks about the Cobb owls and the weather.
The situation with the adults is unclear. I zoomed out the camera to see if I could see an adult perched near the nest. Of course, now the camera is momentarily stuck until it gets more solar charge (I'll zoom back in as soon as I can). Looking at ground around the nest tower, you can see the entire island is underwater. The tower is safely 30' in the air and not threatened by floods. The adults are likely in the nearby fishing shack riding out the storm.
For those folks wondering why we can't go out and save these chicks, the nest is on a barrier island requiring a 20 minute boat ride. There are 10-15' waves, 7' tides, and widespread flooding. These conditions are extremely unsafe for anyone to be on the water. Plus all the bridges we would need to take to access the boat ramp are closed because of high winds 30-50 mph.

I believe the weather report shows the weather there not clearing before tomorrow at the earliest. Then the flooding has to recede before any possible help could arrive, and according to Libby there are bridges on the mainland closed, besides the logistics of getting to the island. I am afraid we are looking at 2 or 3 more days before anyone could get there. Lets hope the water on the island recedes so mom and dad can actually find some voles, or there will be nothing for them to feed the owlets if they should survive. Just brace yourselves, because that is a long time for 2 wk old owlets to go without food, using their energy to stay warm.

The storm still remains in VA. News announced that the governor of VA has declared a state of emergency, and most of VA coast is out of power. With the flooding at Cobb, even if the parents wanted to when the storm leaves tomorrow, I doubt the flooding will recede enough for them to hunt. We may lose all the owlets, and am concerned even now for the mom n dad. In fact from VA all the way to NJ they are declaring a state of emergency along all the coastlines from rains and the strong winds that are taking down power lines. Not good news. It is looking grimmer for our owl family. If any survive at this point, we can consider it a miracle.
Considering that Owls don't have oil glands, I fear for the parents as well. I hope they have found good shelter, so they will not get soaked and die.
Then they will be able to nest again, next spring. They were extremely late, we all were quite surprised by this nest.
Hope is rapidly fading for the owlets I'm afraid. Even if the weather improves rapidly, because of the flooding there will be hardly any prey to catch.

It all reminds me of the Maine eagles ... watching Mom and Dad try to keep their newly hatched chicks alive in the Patriots Day storm.
That indeed was so heartbreaking. It all is a reminder of the harshness of life in the wild. And with these web cams we are confronted with that in a very "close up and personal" way.

I read this 2009 was the worst flooding in 20 years.
by obxbarb 14 novembre
but the bridge over to the eastern shore was reopened yesterday. The waves are huge, and the tide is still high. Its not too windy for gulls and pelicans, which are hunting for fish like crazy.
Needless to say, I've been tempted to drive over the bridge...
15 novembre
I was at the bridge, but it was a little too long and I decided against it. The storm was completely gone by tonight.
