Congratulations Erie, first to fly...!
Mr. Wright reports that after several weeks of wing flapping practice and teetering on the edge of their 12th story ledge, Erie is now flying successfully between ledges and making short flights.
Treasure has not been so successful. She was found walking down a city street and had to be rescued and returned to her 12th floor nest. She may have tried flying too early, or a gust of wind may have caught her while wing-flapping, but she ended up on the ground - a dangerous place in the city - and her muscles would not be strong enough yet to fly up.
Treasure, a female, is heavier than Erie, and she probably hatched last since she was the last to lose her baby down.
Mr. Harvey Webster, Director of Wildlife Resources at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History tells us:
“Fledging is always a nervous time as there are many perils in learning how to fly in the canyons of the city, starting with the fact that the young are 12 stories up. The winds in the city come swirling around the buildings and can form treacherous eddies and downdrafts. And yet this is a rite of passage that every young falcon must face.
First flights are usually short distance affairs from ledge to ledge and roof to roof. But within the next week to ten days all four will be flying over Public Square. And although they might continue to spend the night at the nest box they will become independent of that site. They will continue to depend on their parents for food for the next 4-6 weeks.”
SW and Buckeye are always close by watching over their chicks.

Treasure ci ha provato anche lei, ma è atterrata sulla piazza che ovviamente è il posto più pericoloso della zona. Poi non è più riuscita a volare e, naturalmente, è stata soccorsa subito e riportata sul ledge.
E' femmina e ha ancora del piumino bianco perché è nata un po' più tardi, ma non ne vuole saperne di essere da meno del fratello. Assomiglia a sua madre, un'alfa purissima senza macchia e senza paura.
Che il signore dei falchi protegga questa piccola temeraria e le permetta di diventare il falcone che promette di essere, che viva a lungo dando alla luce generazioni, che sia fedele al suo compito nel mondo con coraggio e con gioia e, last but not least, che abbia fortuna! Quando Scott Wright è arrivato, la piccola era già stata rispedita nel nido, perciò non ci sono foto dell'incidente.

"Treasure made 2 flights within 35 minutes, encompassing a 5 story change of altitude, all in the face of a stiff wind blowing in from the south. Very impressive. Scott has reported that Erie continues to make fast strides in flight including soaring over Public Square with his parents." Harvey

Treasure has joined her brother in flight and both chicks are flying successfully.
Now the fledglings are practicing take-offs and landings and learning to soar with their parents, and Erie was seen making a “mini-stoop” after only one week of flying. The fledglings will stay close to the nestsite for the next month or two, and their parents will watch over them, feed them, and help them learn hunting skills. Mr. Scott Wright, nest monitor, tells us, "The young are not self-sufficient for about 3 weeks or so, and the parents continue to feed them. Over a period of time and in stages, the parents will teach their young to hunt. At first, the parents will feed their young by holding the food in their talons while flying and the young must fly out to get it and exchange the food in mid-air. Next, the adults will drop the food as the kids fly close so they can catch it; then the parents will have live food and drop it. Finally, the adults will hunt with the young. One year I observed the female adult bird flying with the young higher up, and the male adult bird would spook up some food (prey) and then try and corral or herd or force the prey to fly toward the young and the adult female above."
The first few months of flying are dangerous for young peregrines as they must learn to fly successfully at high speeds. Think of a teenager who just gotten his or her driver's license and then is handed the keys to a car that can go 150MPH!!! One thing Mother Nature does to help the new flyers survive is to give them "Speed Brakes" of a sort. If you look closely at the edges of the juvenile feathers you can see a brownish ROUGH edge. This causes a slower flow of air over the wing and makes the young falcons fly slower than adults who have molted into adult feathers. Look closely at pictures of the young falcons and compare them to their parents to see the difference in plumage.
SW's adult plumage is on the left - notice the difference in color as well as the structure. Juvenile feathers are on the right and show "Nature's Speed Brakes".
Soon, the chicks will begin their own lives and fly to parts unknown. Since they wear bands, we may find out what happens to them. Where will they go and how will their lives turn out?

No, no. La cam non chiude, il forum continua su argomenti vari e comunque ci saranno ancora per un po' le foto di Scott a documentare come si comportano i due giovani.
Buck&SW non si allontanano molto dal nido, di solito. Io sospetto che lei 'sappia' che non è bene andare lontano come faceva Zenith.
Il Falcon Flash è soprattutto rivolto alle scuole, per questo è sempre informativo-educativo, il che non guasta, ho imparato molto leggendolo negli anni. Ci vuole solo far sapere che la stagione è finita e che è tempo di salutare i nuovi falchi.
