Peregrine nests successful
Dayton's three peregrine falcon chicks were among an estimated 56 young peregrine falcons fledged from 19 successful nests across the state this year. A year ago, a record 60 peregrine falcon chicks fledged from 18 nests.
The Dayton chicks, named Flight, Light and Crystal — a male and two females — all fledged successfully, although the two females fell to the ground one time each, but were uninjured and relocated by volunteers.
Their mother, Snowball, disappeared before the chicks fledged and was never found.
Hopefully, the adult male, Mercury, will have a new mate next spring. He is now 17 years old.
There was a peregrine nest in Springfield this year, but no eggs were produced.

Kattee, my sister contacted one of the people who volunteered for fledge watch duty in Dayton. She said, according to Betty Ross at Glen Helen Raptor Center, they didn't receive any news of the fledglings or Mercury. The mindset of this is "no news is good news'. Kind of difficult to believe that because there is no news of Snowball and it's obvious she met her death in some way on May 19th.
Did catch a the tail of one of the fledglings on cam 3 earlier this week.
Unfortunately, the PHOTO GALLERY has not been updated since June 26 and those cam images only go up to June 13th. It would help to have that updated with cam images from June 14th to the current date.
Mercury raised those 3 chicks on his own - the oldest of the 3 chicks was just 10 days old and the youngest only 7 days old, at the time of Snowball's death.
A new female will come to Dayton sometime by nesting season in 2008. A vacant spot (of a male or female falcon) is quickly filled by a new arrival - that is the way it's been since the falcons were introduced to the big cities.
Just keep hoping and praying that great Mercury remains strong and safe and will continue to be the patriarch falcon of Dayton.
