The Edmonton female just caught the jet stream or a jet!

After dawdling in northern Texas , like an Oiler on the Calgary hockey rink, the Edmonton female just shot north into Wyoming in the past three days. On the 18th the Edmonton female was near Amarillo Texas , apparently not in a rush to face the cold spring weather, never mind last week's snow. But on the night of the 20/21 she was in northern Wyoming . From 6:17 pm when the first signal was sent on the 20th to night fall she flew an additional 130 km, to spend the night 1160 km north of her roost on the 18th. This means that she actually flew there in two days, 1160 km! By the night of the 20/21 she was about 1270 km from Edmonton . Thus if she kept up the same pace she could be home by the night of the 22 or on the 23. Maybe a more realistic date would be the 24th. Depends on lots of things including tail winds, her energy levels, and any delays at the border crossing without a passport. Fortunately she does not have any purchases to declare :)

Then the fireworks could begin. The new female at the University of Alberta has been sitting on the nest box, oblivious to the drama about to unfold. She has looked comfortable on the web cam. Alastair Franke reports that she has courted with the male and copulated several times. He confirms that the male is the same male that nested there last year, but has yet to confirm the identity of the banding female.

So if you are near the UofA campus keep an eye out the window, or on the web cam. These falcons have been known to fight to the death!!

The other news is the Fort Saskatchewan male has realized that spring is here and he is finally headed north. This falcon wintered on the Pacific coast of southern Mexico . On the 17th he was in northern Mexico , 1600 km north of his winter home. But his rate of travel slowed in the past three days. On the 20th he was in central Texas near Abilene .

Pat Young reports that the Calgary female was seen at her downtown nest at the Len Werry Building (Telus) at 12:35 PM (just past noon) on April 17th. Although the transmitter was not observed, according to the transmitter she spent the night on the building, so this was almost certainly her.

la battaglia di alberta

Messaggio da Roxy »

posto questo articolo ... e successo quello che si temeva... battaglia senza quartiere... per ora sembra tutto fermo, si spera senza ferite mortali........
spero sia finita con le guerre in volo

EDMONTON — The fight, says, Geoff Holroyd, unfolded like an episode of “Animal Kingdom, Jerry Springer-style.”

A female peregrine falcon received a rude homecoming when she landed in her nestbox at the University of Alberta Monday night after completing a 26-day 6,500-kilometre journey.

She came face to face with an intruder — another female who’d taken the nest over in her absence.

Font: ****What ensued was a battle royale that left both birds bloodied and beaten.

The aerial fireworks were witnessed first-hand by Holroyd and fellow biologists Wayne Nelson and Alastair Frank, who’d camped out on the roof of a nearby parkade to await the Edmonton bird’s arrival.

It, and a peregrine falcon from Calgary, had both wintered fairly close to one another in Colombia and were tracked back to their homebases using new technology, solar-powered transmitters that allowed biologists their closest look ever at the birds’ migration.

The Calgary bird made it back to Cowtown days ahead of its Edmonton rival, which, says Holroyd, seemed to “stall” over northern Texas.

It may have just been saving up energy; it suddenly “rocketed” out of Texas and into Wyoming.

It left northern Wyoming three days ago and quickly covered the remaining 1,270 kilometres to Edmonton, arriving Monday night just after 8 p.m.

Its mate flew out to greet it, says Holroyd, then veered off to his roost as the female approached the nestbox. (Males, says Holroyd, do not get involved in territorial battles and will “stand by and let the females duke it out.”)

“When she landed on the nest site,” says Holroyd, “she turned around, and, boom, there’s the interloper — the mistress, if you like — in her face.”

The fight began instantly. The females locked talons, then began biting each other using their bills.

Eight minutes later, still locked in mortal combat, they tumbled to the edge of the nestbox and out, landing on a rooftop about 10 feet below, out of sight of witnesses.

“We could hear them squawking,” says Holroyd, “but we couldn’t see them.”

Frank, meanwhile, managed to convince a security guard to let him onto the rooftop, and, once there, they separated the combatants.

“They had fought for 25 minutes before they were separated,” says Holroyd. “There was a lot of blood, and a lot of missing feathers.”

After weighing and measuring both birds, the biologists decided to let the interloper go and to keep the other falcon overnight.

When they released her this morning from a building two kilometres from the nestbox, she wasted no time in returning to the battle site, covering the distance in less than 90 seconds.

The interloper met her and gave chase, and the pair covered about three city blocks before engaging in a mid-air battle. Locked together, they tumbled to the ground, landing in the back yard of a residence.

The homeowner, startled by the racket, went to investigate and scared the birds to flight.

The Edmonton bird flew north, says Holroyd, the interloper back to the nest site.

It wasn’t over yet.

An hour later, the Edmonton bird appeared at the nest site again.

“The (interloper) gave chase,” says Holroyd, “but only for a kilometre or so; it broke off and came back to the nest.”

For now, at least, the Edmonton bird seems resigned to its fate and hasn’t returned.

The best-case scenario, says Holroyd, is that she’s gone in search of another mate, and another nest.

“Two years ago, she was the one who chased another female from the nestbox at the University,” says Holroyd, “so I guess you could say that what goes around comes around.”

May 2 - The Fort Saskatchewan male arrived 'home' at about 5 pm May 1 and has reclaimed the nest which has 3 eggs and maybe a 4th. The now-homeless 'Edmonton female' was in northwest Edmonton about noon on April 30th. She then flew 90 km north towards Boyle, then south east 100 km, possibly along the North Saskatchewan River valley, then southwest to Vegreville when the transmissions ended in late afternoon. As on the 27th, she flew over 300 km again. Her wandering definitely makes her look homeless so far. A fourth pair of Edmonton urban falcons has been confirmed at Jasper Avenue and 109th Street. The Red Deer male has returned to Red Deer but without his transmitter.

April 30 – The female falcon with the transmitter that occupied the University of Alberta site for the past two summers has not returned to the nest site since losing the site last Monday/Tuesday. Data from the transmitter on April 27 and April 29/30 indicates that she has gone as far a field as Camrose, Newbrook, Two Hills and Vegreville, traveling up to 300km per day, searching for a nest site and a mate. The male falcon from Fort Saskatchewan is moving slowly north, last recorded in northern Montana . He should return around May 2 and is also expected to face a challenge for his previous nest site, currently occupied by a pair that already has one egg as of April 27.

April 26: On the morning of April 21 the Edmonton female falcon was in northern Wyoming, 1270 km from Edmonton. As predicted she arrived at her nest on April 23 - at exactly 8:07pm to be precise. Wayne Nelson and Geoff Holroyd had set up a watch on the roof of the nearby parkade. Earlier in the day Alastair Franke and Geoff had made separate visits and all was quiet with the male and the new female occasionally interacting, but mostly sitting enjoying the warm spring day.

April 22 – The Edmonton female falcon traveled 1160km north in two days earlier this week and is currently in northern Wyoming, about 1270 km away from Edmonton. Arrival is now expected to be by April 24 th . The Fort Saskatchewan male has slowed his journey and is currently in central Texas near Abilene .

Artificial eggs were placed in the nest in an attempt to get the male and female birds to incubate. Later this summer a foster chick will be provided.
