2007 Falcon Information
Mother: “Beth” (band of 25/B) was wild-produced in 2003 at the Midwest Generation Power Plant in Waukegan, IL.
Father: (band of 45/H) produced in 2001 at the Grand Haven L., Sims Plant site in Grand Haven, MI.
Name the Falcon Chicks Contest 2007 Winners
In addition to naming the four chicks, an additional name was chosen due to the fact the adult male Peregrine currently doesn't have a name.

Patriot's Pride - submitted by Trevor Winkel, kindergartener at Suamico Elementary School. Trevor chose the name because he is proud of his country and of the falcons.

Faith - submitted by Alec Ingold, 4th grader at Suamico Elementary School. Alec chose the name because we need to have faith that the peregrine falcons will come off the endangered list.

Pulligrine - submitted by Melissa Hill, 5th grader at Kennedy Elementary School. Melissa chose the name because it is a combination of the Pulliam Power Plant and Peregrine.

`Akos - submitted by Cole Breidenbach, 6th grader at Notre Dame Middle School of De Pere. Cole chose the name because it means "white falcon" in the Hungarian language and Hungary is close to Africa, where the falcons are believed to have come from.

Virginia - submitted by Jacqueline Sehring, 7th grader at Notre Dame Middle School of De Pere. Jacqueline chose the name to honor and remember all the students who were killed at Virginia Tech.

Winners of the naming contest and their families will be invited to attend and participate in the banding of the chicks, which is held on Tuesday, May 29, 2007. They will have their photograph taken with the falcon chicks, and their classroom will also receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the Birds of Prey exhibit at the Wildlife Sanctuary.

General Information
High above the place where the Fox River meets the bay of Green Bay, nestled in the southwest corner of the roof of our J.P. Pulliam Power Plant, you will find a specially built home designed for the rare Peregrine Falcon. This unlikely spot has produced 32 Peregrine chicks to date.

The birds are attracted to power plants because of their tall stacks, their proximity to open water and the steady food supply of other birds in the area.

In 2006, for the first time, four Peregrines were hatched atop our Weston Power Plant in Rothschild, WI. Wisconsin Public Service employees have been trying to attract the Peregrines to nest at the Weston Plant for the last five years and these were likely the first set of chicks born in Marathon County.

Background
The Peregrine Falcon is a crow-sized bird of prey that is famous and admired for its beauty, speed and agility. Native to Wisconsin, peregrines originally nested along the bluffs of the Mississippi, St. Croix and Wisconsin rivers, and along the Door peninsula.

The population withered because of the use of the chemical pesticide DDT which weakened eggshells and prevented hatching. As a result, peregrines disappeared from the entire eastern United States and were placed on the U.S. Endangered Species List in 1973. Although it was delisted in 1999, Peregrine Falcons remain on Wisconsin's endangered species list.

The Wisconsin Peregrine Trust's goal is to establish 20 nesting pairs, which would enable the population to sustain itself in the state. The Trust hopes that the peregrines can be restored to the natural cliffs and rocky bluffs along the Mississippi River in western Wisconsin and also along the Door County peninsula. Wisconsin Public Service through its Foundation provided a grant to The Wisconsin Peregrine Trust in May 2004 to assist with this effort.

Between 2001 - 2004, 13 falcons were also born on the rooftop of the containment building at the Kewaunee Nuclear Plant. In 2003, three falcons were born.
