Falcons Prepare to Fly
As Woodmen of the World falcons leave the nest and prepare for their first flights, here are some interesting facts about this year's birds.
Are Zeus and Hera still bringing food to the falcons?
The adult birds will continue to feed the young even after they leave the ledge. During that time, they will teach them how to fly and hunt.
How much longer will the young birds be near the nest before they leave?
The young birds usually leave in August. The adults, Zeus and Hera, stay year round.
How was the gender of the birds determined?
The gender of the falcons is determined by the size of their leg bones. The young birds are banded when they are between 18 and 21 days old. At this time, their legs and feet have reached maturity (in size) and are measured. The last bird hatched wasn't quite old enough to be positive of the gender and was banded as a male. The count this year was three female and one male.
What is the significance of the leg bands?
Leg bands have changed the colors over the years. Purple is the latest color for birds from the upper Midwest. The second band is the Federal Game & Parks number. This year, the band numbers for the females are R00, R01 and R02. The male is B61.
